Resigned to Jaw Surgery?

Hi, I have a question about orthotropics and similar treatment.

I am a 16 year old boy, and I just in the last year or two developed an edge to edge bite. I recently consulted with a few local orthodontists who said my only option other than camouflaging the skeletal imbalance with braces, is jaw surgery after I am an adult.

I just found out about orthotropics, but my worry is that I am too old for such a treatment. My question is, is there any treatment that can help advance my upper jaw at my age? Or should I just resign myself to jaw surgery?

The orthodontist said my palate is wide enough that an expanded isn’t needed- it’s just the length that’s too short. I would appreciate any sort of advice or help. Thank you.

I forgot to say— the orthodontist said my palate is wide, just the length is too short, so expander won’t do anything much for me. I updated  my initial question. Thank you!

Since you're still young, and you say that your palate is wide enough, you might successfully achieve some forward changes from practicing good oral posture alone.

AGGA (  /community/community/main-forum/fixed-anterior-growth-guidance-appliance-fagga-holy-grail-gonial-angle-change-maxilla-movement-forwards-and-palate-widening-without-surgery/ ) is an appliance that focuses on sagittal expansion. Another option less invasive than jaw surgery might be MSE + extra-oral traction (  /community/community/main-forum/possibly-new-holy-grail-for-moving-the-maxilla-up-and-forwards/ ), which should achieve both transverse and sagittal changes with only the surgery to implant the anchorage screws.

Whether you use one of those appliances or some other treatment, you will probably need to find the right orthodontist focused on creating tongue space and protecting the airway.

I highly doubt this cant be fixed with braces. Or palate expansion. You probably just need to find the right orthos. I talked to a dentist the other day that said that palate expansion is literally impossible in adults (which isn't true).

I've heard that the DNA appliance can allow you to move specific teeth while expanding the maxilla. This seems to me like you could expand one side particularly more than the other, helping with crossbite. I'd be interested if anyone else has heard about this.

If I were you I would watch as many orthotropic and myofunctional therapy videos as possible and start mewing. This should include proper tongue posture, swallowing, and overall posture along with gum chewing.

You are still very young so your skeletal and oral structure will be very malleable and prone to change. It is going to be hard work and it likely won't be easy, but if you are successful, the long-term benefits will be enormous. If you do end up having to get some kind of professional work done, it should help fix your dental issues while also allowing and encouraging you to fix the underlying causes of your dental issues, which is improper tongue posture.

Here is some good places to start...

Surgery should only be a last resort option.

@neveragain is in his 20s and has made significant progress
