I've discovered mewing about a month ago (right before my 19th birthday) and would say i started mewing properly for about the past two weeks only - been doing it half-right or completely wrong all the other time.

I completely changed my body posture, as I've discovered it was horrendous - unconscious tilt of spine on one side which resulted in a head tilt too. Also implemented proper chewing (as I was chewing only with my right side, I now chew consciously and take my time with both sides).

Along with correct tongue posture, I've been working on keeping my neck long even tho it's quite hard because from all I've been reading online - my face is quite long and recessed. I would say that wrong orthodontic work added to that too, so at the moment I'm feeling quite mad that years of wearing braces only made my face and bone structure worse, longer and narrower.

My profile from the eyes down is pretty flat. My lower third is quite recessed, giving me an infantile look and a weak chin. When I hold correct spine-skull allignment and mew hard I have a double chin (which I honestly don't mind as long as I'm doing it right). Right side of my face is more forward, and left side looks "melted" as all of you seem to be calling it on here. I like to call myself a live version of a Picasso painting lol.

I can actually see the correlation between the recession of my face and teeth, as the teeth on my left side are positioned lower than on my right side.

My question is, ultimately, is it going to be possible to make my structure look any better at this age?  Don't get me wrong, I'm not the ugliest person in the world, however, it would be nice to finally be able to breathe through my nose properly + have a nicer profile and looks that go with it.

When I mew and chew I feel it in my cheekbones. So far with proper chewing I managed to activate muscles in my left (recessed) side. I figured that mewing results aren't gonna come in that soon because I'm 19 after all. I committed to doing yoga and hanging from bars so I can keep my posture better and add more force to the palate with correct tongue posture.

I just wanna know if it's possible to widen the palate with correct tongue posture and bring your face (or at least the recessed side) forward at the age of 19 without any crazy procedures or orthodontic work (since I live in a country where I can't get access to any treatments and well, my orthodontist sucks). I feel like asking for some kind of palate expander, since mine is obviously assymetrical, however it's gonna cost a sh*tton of money and well, I don't have that.

If you've come this far thanks for reading and I would love to know what you think.

  • Hi.its my First message on The forum. I turned 20 yo two weeks ago and has been mewing  (proper tongue posture) for about 3 weeks and so far i noticed improvement in my nasal breathing. It is definetely possible to make significant changes for better since you are 19 so keep going!
  • My question: can mewing make slight overbite worse?

I am 32 and have made great progress by adding 6mm to my palate. I did start at 38mm width however (and yes I still had a melted look). I have gotten taller, my jaw and chin more prominent, and my lower third stronger. Don't buy into this "life ends at 18" horseshit from the ignorant corners of the web.

Hello :) Wow, nasal breathing improvement in 3 weeks? That sounds impressive. I'll definitely keep doing it, I have nothing to lose at this point!

And I don't really have a definite answer to your question, sine I'm not a professional. Mewing widens the upper palate for sure, and I've read that the lower jaw usually follows the upper jaw progress over time. You just gotta be persistant and keep the tips of your teeth together while in proper tongue posture. Maybe work more on widening your palate than going forwards in the beginning. But then again, I don't know your intermolar width so I wouldn't know for sure.

Also I completely forgot to mention that I'm a female. Don't know if that brings anything to the topic. But yeah.

Currently waiting on my next (after a long time) orthodontist appointment. Looks to me that I've got a slight crossbite on my left, recessed side - my upper teeth are in and lower teeth are out when I correct my jaw position, which kind of makes mewing harder. I knew the left side of my maxilla is definitely recessed because it's harder for me to put my tongue in the correct place, my teeth get in the way lol. Maybe my doc can at least help me with that. I think that if I just manage to widen the left side of the palate a little bit - or even just manage to move my teeth a bit out, I'm on a horse. We'll see how it goes.

I've seen your posts and am pretty impressed by your work. Do you know how I'd be able to measure intermolar width myself? Or do I have to ask my ortho to do me a favor lol

  • Good point! I am also interested if There's a method to measure intermolar width myself. So far i have been putting firm pressure against my palate. I was always a mouth breather so my face is long and "melted". I wish I heard about proper tongue posture earlier but still i am motivated to change. I wish you Good luck Narrowface in your mewing journey  🙂  😉

Impressions or just a ruler if your eye is consistent.

Mewing should not make an overbite worse. If done properly, the widening of the palate will give the mandible more room to jut forward, thus closing the bite more and more.

Its just an expression ,meaning if i get that out of my way it will definitely be easier to progress with mewing alone .

Ok I thought it was either that or something to do with a horse face but more the former lol

@EddieMoney Understandable lol.

Just curious but is it normal for molars to feel looser in their sockets after two weeks of mewing? Idk if its actually progress or if I'm having a placebo effect sorta feeling. And is it problematic if I clench while mewing? Or should i just go with front teeth touching only - since I have a crossbite mewing is a bit assymetrical so I have to clench on the cross biting side a bit.

On the other hand, my mastic gum arrived to the po box today, and I'm planning on starting to use it on friday. Looking forward to strengthening my masseters, not too much but just so I can keep that back part of the tongue up.

I remember my front teeth feeling looser after like the first month but it went away. How much of your palate are you able to cover? Make sure your tongue isn't thrusting against teeth but producing light force against your palate continuously and evenly .

I tried measuring my intermolar width, every time coming up around 35mm so I'm trying my best to cover as much as possible in my case - I definitely feel sensation in my left cheekbone and the orbital bone. Which is actually what I'm trying to do - bring out my left side a bit and then when I have the sides similar I can concentrate more on the forwarding my maxilla.

Thanks for the tip. Pushing my teeth with my tongue happens from time to time but I'm trying my best lol. I also use a bit of negative suction to keep the tongue in place and have yet to discover how to properly keep the tongue posture while sleeping. I completely changed my sleeping position - from stomach to side/back accompanied by pillow support so my posture feels more natural. I managed to mackenzie tuck one time but feel as if that way of sleeping is way too advanced for me atm. It's definitely a lot of changes in a short period of time.

My molars became like that after beginning mewing and every time I began chewing gum (every stint only lasted two weeks or so, I kept quitting) and they've had that loose feeling for the around the past year without a break. They've never gotten any worse, dentists haven't said anything, and don't actually move like loose teeth would, though one of them kept bleeding following an attempt of chewing surgical tubing once for about 30 seconds.

I'm now chewing gum 3+ hours every 2 days with no problems, so maybe it might be all in my head now. Regardless, keep monitoring them in case you're doing them damage. I can't speak on how it would work with a crossbite, but mild clenching with tongue posture and a chin tuck is the only consistent way for me to feel anything at all in my face, so it's worth a try. Keep the clenching mild and nothing harder than that.

Will definitely make sure I don't overclench since it might lead to teeth grinding during sleep.

Good news too - I woke up with my mouth closed and my tongue locked to the front of my palate (I know most of the tongue should be up but as a person who used to sleep with their mouth open that's a huge achievement). Somehow I feel as if mewing has gotten easier these last few days, I think I've finally gotten the hang of it.
