Hello all.
As a background I'm 26 and I've always chewed with the right side of my mouth, got braces in middle school, and mouth breathed at times. This has of course led to minor asymmetry which I've been recently trying to correct.
I've been mewing for the past 2 months, and noticed the tongue not working the left side, likely due to my only using the right side of my mouth. To mitigate this, I've cleaned up posture a lot, and began to chew using my left side. I haven't done much more than facial exercises/stretching, posture correcting, and some suction holds here and there.
Yesterday I noticed out of the blue that my jaw had shifted more unevenly, tightening on the right side even more (I imagine due to the mewing), but now my bite is more uneven, and my asymmetry is much more noticeable. This would be fine, but what's troubling is that even my swallow veers to the right side, putting more pressure on the palate on the right. This seems to make it even more difficult to work the weaker left side. To compound the issue, I recently noticed only one nostril seems to be breathing (but to be fair, it is probably functioning better than ever)
Is this par the course, and the left side will follow with more chewing and strengthening? or will this course of action keep compounding to the right side, while leaving the left less developed? I suspect these problems were there all along, and now beginning to correct them, I am dealing with them to a higher degree, but it is still disheartening to be dealing with -especially the uneven swallow, which I fear will lead to worse results.
The first is me a little over a year ago, second is me now.
I am still okay looking, and I don't mind the discomfort as long as it's part of the process. I've ceased suctioning, and will continue working on posture, but I would greatly appreciate any advice.
Thank you for taking the time to read and respond.
