Hi, I was wondering if anybody could help me/give me any tips to avoid root resorption.
Explanation of my Orthotropic situation...
I began mewing about a year ago due to having a type of malocclusion which seemed to baffle every dentist and orthodontist I saw. I had orthodontic work done on my upper teeth only - 2 extractions and 2 years of braces from age 14-16. But this left me with mismatched jaw widths so that the only teeth that would touch were the front incisors and I could fit the width of my finger between my molars when I attempted to 'bite'. This worried my dentist who referred me to orthodontists on two occasions. They were both none the wiser on what to do so just advised me to leave it. However, I was not satisfied with just leaving it as this meant I couldn't chew properly, was always hungry, couldn't breathe through my nose, and was slowly wearing down my incisors.
At 20, I went to a private orthodontist who told me that getting jaw surgery 'might' correct it, but overall he wasn't sure if he could help me (oh, and this was going to cost £14,000 which was out of the question, and as I'm in my early 20s and obsessed with relocating I had no hopes of residing in one town long enough to get through the various waiting lists to get it on the NHS).
So I decided to try mewing and bought a three-way palatal expander which I would wear all day for the first couple of months, turning the expansion gears every other day. I got good expansion to the point where there was room for correct tongue posture and swallowing. I noticed two gaps appearing where my removed premolars would be. I have been using dental separators (tiny elastic band things I bought online) to encourage this separation. My routine is now mewing, correct head/neck posture, wearing the expander at night sort of as a retainer - adjusting it when necessary, and adding thicknesses of separator to the gap where my premolars would be as and when it enlarges - with hope of getting a reverse extraction when the gap is wide enough/I can afford it. I am overall very pleased with the results. The first thing I noticed was being able to breathe through my nose and the difference this made to my sleep and mood, and now I'm really noticing the aesthetic advantages to my facial attractiveness too.
QUESTION IN SHORT
However, my fear is that (after reading several papers on root resorption) the amount that my teeth have been messed with (from ages 14-nearly 22) will make the likelihood of my teeth reabsorbing very high. I fear that my lack of research and careless use of the expander over the last year may have greatly increased my risk. Has anybody experienced this from mewing/palatal expansion? What can be done to mitigate this risk? Should I have taken things slower?
Best,
Erin
Bump!
I'm also worried about this, but sadly I can't help
I actually seem to have a very similar problem to you in regards to my bite, for which I am now undergoing DNA appliance treatment. Regarding the roots, perhaps turn your expander a full turn every 4 days instead of every other day?
If I were you I would get it checked with a dentist if you are concerned about root resorption. I’ve personally had orthodontics non stop on and off since 16 years old trying to fix the bite problem and create tongue space and each different treatment seemed to be counteracting the last and moving teeth back and forward. My roots however have managed to remain pretty stable even with all the work done so far. But your expansion at the moment is probably more significant than mine as I have just started wearing the Y-plate DNA appliance.
How has your bite been going since all the expansion?
If your jaws are the right size, and proportional, top and bottom, that should fix your bite.
