Hi everyone so as I was reading about tongue frenectomy’s online and the benefits that come from getting your frenulum removal i decided to get a frenectomy thinking it will help me with mewing even more. I want to say that I didn’t have a tie to begin with my frenulum was normal and my swallowing & tongue posture   Was already good. But ever since the frenectomy I’m not able to get the posterior third to hit the soft palate because it seem to move into my airway and I notice I snore now due to the fact that my tongue falls into the airway & my swallowing is not how it was before now I only feel the middle part of the the tongue achieving the swallow. My tongue posture has changed it’s like I’m not able to get into position like I used to & chin tucking doesn’t work it’s like my tongue went more back into my throat. I am really stressing over this and feeling regret for getting this unnecessary frenectomy my tongue was fine the way it was. Also I was speaking to a Reddit user that commented on my thread and he claimed that the same thing happened to him. If any of you have gotten a frenectomy and noticed these things how did you fix it or can it not be fixed ?

hmmm i had 2 frenectomies that have achieved absolutely nothing for me. it seems there are a lot of useless practitioners out there in the field that shouldnt be conducting these procedures. perhaps it was a botched job and it left significant scarring. im seeing dr, zaghi soon hopefully he can help me otherwise im screwed for life. post pictures before/after so i can see what you mean

I don't know why these surgeries have been done so much nowadays. Simply having a frenulum makes people believe they have a tongue tie.

I asked the dentist to send me the before and after & she hasn’t send me nothing yet It’s been a month and a half since the procedure. I agree usually looking at the reviews helps , this was suppose to be one of the top laser dentist in nj specifically known for frenectomy. I think they did a alright job but the thing is removing the frenulum in my case was unnecessary for me it did nothing but made it hard to get the back posterior third up into the soft palate since the back part of the tongue is in past the airway , I only have the middle part of the tongue and tip placed on the palate & the main part posterior third is just in the throat it was never like this, I mewed pretty good before now it’s to the point where I think I won’t achieve the results I would have since I done this frenectomy & now I’m worrying of my face becoming longer because of this smh.

I agree , the frenulum is there for a reason and now it shows me that it’s there to keep the tongue in place and to prevent it from sliding back into the throat, can’t believe everything you read on the internet, if your tongue tied then yes it may help but if not then it’s a waste of money and will make things bad.

Idk what to do now it’s like the back part of my tongue is deep in the throat and that leaves me with only the middle part and the tip to work with , it just feels very unnatural what a setup...

I think the only situation where you need intervention is if the frenulum attaches too close to the tip of the tongue or to the tip of the tongue and/or the frenulum is thick. I used to be worried about my "tongue-tie" then I realized and asked myself "do I feel any issues with not being able to posture my tongue correctly because of the frenulum", and no, I had no issues at all. If the frenulum was an issue I should feel a struggle and a stretch to get the tongue on the roof of the mouth yet I don't feel any of that.

@Kraw109, and why don't you have a consultation with a Myofunctional therapist/speech terapist. Maybe they could help you retrain your tongue, so that at least other muscles get stronger and compensate (?)

Usually it is recommended to go to a myofunctional therapist before and after a frenectomy, to retrain your whole tongue anyway.

Unfortunately there is no near by myofunctional therapist in my area , can’t find nothing in google.

My question is that let’s say I can’t ever get my posterior third up like I used to before will having half the tongue from the middle to the tip as far back as possible still enough to make gains or to maintain ?

These results do not make sense, unless you are still not fully healed. Have you been doing myofunctional therapy to exercise the tongue? If you don't have a myofunctional therapist nearby then you can consult with one online, like Sarah Hornsby or Kathy Winslow.

@kraw109, I don't know how the medical system/insurance works where you live, but where I come from, a doctor can refer you to a therapist if your situation applies. If it's different, then I would contact a professional online like Sarah Hornsby or Joy Moeller via Email and ask them the same question.

We are not talking about mewing progress anymore, it's not good if your tongue is falling into your throat while you are sleeping (if that is not the case, then please forgive my assumption).

I would try to do the myofunctional exercises that Sclera and Abdulrahman recommended in here to strengthen your tongue (given to them by Sarah according to their own case----that's why it would be ideal to have your own assessment with someone):

/community/community/main-forum/tongue-strengthening-exercises/

/community/community/main-forum/first-session-with-myofunctional-therapist-sraha-honrsby-five-new-tongue-exercises/

But I'm not sure how these exercises would work in your case. See if there is improvement, but in any case it is very recommended to look for a professional opinion (yes, I know I'm being very pushy with this).

As for maintaining progress with just the two anterior portions of the tongue on the front palate, I don't know. I think it is best when almost the whole tongue rests on the whole palate, and the posterior part makes contact with the soft palate uvula and the tonsils. To be honest, that's where I saw more progress. Since not being able to put the posterior part as well as I used to--or almost not at all (because of long story), I have lost a lot of progress. Even if the front portion of the tongue was up. But again that's my case, can't speak for yours.

Thank you I’ll have to talk to a dentist and see where I can locate a therapist.

It doesn’t really fall into the throat to point where I’m choking in my sleep it’s more like the posterior third passes the uvula by a few mms probably less than 10 mm, but it makes it difficult to gets that part out of their to go into the soft palate , throughout the years I’ve had good oral posture and developed a square angular jaw I’m just afraid now I might lose it little by little instead of gaining and here is the before and after the frenectomy , not the most accurate shots they took.

After my surgical tongue tie release, the back of the tongue was tethered for me for a couple weeks. Not sure what the healing process is supposed to be like for a laser procedure. What exercises have you been doing? You are supposed to be doing the cave with tongue on the roof of your mouth. My myofunctional therapist also had me do manual work where I gripped my tongue with my fingers using gauze and then pulled it in different directions. These exercises would hurt or be uncomfortable in the beginning, but if you don't do them, then you can heal with even less tongue range of motion than before the procedure.

Were you raising your tongue as high as possible in those photos? You should be able to get the tongue tip behind your top front teeth when you mouth is already open. If you can't, then the tongue-tie release was not aggressive enough and/or it is healing wrong. You are still healing so there should still be a chance to improve your tongue mobility. Consult with a myofunctional therapist online ASAP.

I did the exercises for the first 3 weeks but went 50 % after because i thought my tongue would become to long and make it even harder to mew because that’s what I notice and still do, is there a way I can message you , you’ve had a frenectomy is as well so there may be somethings you can help me with.

Even right after my frenectomy I wasn’t able to touch the top behind the front teeth but my tongue was still pretty mobile to mew I wasn’t  tied down , just now it feels like the back posterior third is more back into the uvula I need to push it forward so I can get it to rest in the soft palate again I’m struggling at the moment.

SHIT, I have a frenectomy planned for next week and my tongue tie (or should I just call it frenulum?) looks a lot like yours.
-It looks like you can not lift the tip as much (photo angle is different though). Is this true? If so, it does not make sense to me. In your latest picture it looks like you can lift it higher.

-Could it be that the frenectomy was not the problem but not doing enough exercises to stretch the tongue?

-Could it be that the frenectomy is not the problem, but the teeth being too far back, thus pushing the tongue back, which now can be pushed back further as it is not tied down to the floor of your mouth anymore?

-Could it be that you're not practicing tongue posture enough? Because when I have my tongue against the roof of my mouth all day, it stays there during the night. Maybe this would prevent the tongue from dropping in the troat? It's confusing by the way, because sometimes I see snoring and sneep apnea as an indication to get a frenectomy.

I thought it's a tongue tie when you have this guitar string like piece?

@kraw109

Was this called an anterior tie release or posterior tie release by the way?

If you actually were diagnosed with a tongue tie by a professional you don’t need to worry. This person just decided to get one without even having a tie.

I had a tongue tie that was successfully released, and mine was maybe a little better or worse than yours. Looks like you didn't do the post-op stretches essential for that big hole to heal correctly. The tongue will usually heal to look as if you had never had any release done at all if you just let it be after the surgery. Did your dentist tell you about the stretches?

The frenum is found everywhere in all animals.  It means"to break or stop". It's needed to limit movement. It holds the tension with a tree curve, which evenly distributes the tension. A tongue tie is self-optimizing and does NOT need to be surgically released. The frenum will gradually stretch to optimal length as a child postures the tongue towards the palate. BAN ALL INVENTED CRIMINAL SURGERIES.   THINK BEFORE YOU ACT UPON MANIPULATIVE YOU TUBES .  FRENECTOMY IS ANOTHER INVENTION TO MAKE MONEY. Schools should teach children how to judge and think about the criminal motives of all professions so they can avoid falling into their traps. Maybe you should consult with an ethical board certified surgeon about reconstructing a functional frenum to prevent serious consequences, and consider a lawsuit.  You were a victim of a psychopath, so maybe you should read a book on psychopaths by robert hare to identify psychos better and avoid further bodily harm from the medical industry.

This isn't true. Mike Mew even has a video with his father where they speculate that too much folate supplementation while pregnant will give your baby a tongue tie. You can stretch it, but what a waste of time! Why not have it lasered? When I had my tongue tie released, I instantly stood up much straighter, could speak much more clearly (and people noticed), the clicking in my jaw stopped after a few days, and my sleep apnea diminished tremendously.
