So I've had braces when I was in primary school, im 16 now ( I know, really early, my parents got persuaded by this money hungry doctor he said if I don't, all my teeth will fall off). I've also had 4 teeth extractions which is apparently really bad for the bone developments. After my braces he gave me this Hawley retainer which covers the whole of the roof of my mouth. How do I mew with that thing? I'm afraid if don't wear it my teeth will go back to being very crooked and my parents spent a lot of my braces. I also have nose allergies so I have mouth breathed for as long as I can remember.

This is really sad. How long have you had this retainer and for how long do you have to wear it? I am afraid you can't mew with that on, and you can't remove it because you risk relapse in a big way.

How long have you been using the retainer to stabilize after your braces came off? Be sure that you are confident in your oral posture before discontinuing use of your retainer, and monitor your intermolar width for relapse. See past threads about stepwise methods to transition from Hawley to Essix to fixed to no retainer while mastering good oral posture. Watch the two videos Dr. Mew has posted to the orthotropics youtube channel on the topic.

Essix

Is it the same thing as Invisalign?

Is it the same thing as Invisalign?

An Essix retainer is like a clear aligner, except a tougher material molded to maintain your corrected alignment rather than progressive steps to change it. People treated with invisalign and other clear aligners are typically given a clear Essix-style retainer to use after treatment. The final invisalign try won't work as a retainer because they aren't intended for long-term use, and start to break down, yellow, and lose rigidity after a few weeks.

Here's one of the old threads I was referencing with a picture of Essix retainers:  /community/community/case-discussions/retainer-needed/#post-2166
