Hey everyone,

I knew about Mewing and I discovered this forum a couple of days ago. I was just doing the traditionnal mewing that Mike Mew explains in its videos, i.e correct swallowing, tongue push ups with the base of the tongue, holding the back of the tongue on the roof. Also chewing and tongue chewing.

But I have seen a lot of counter-intuitive info on this forum. I don't know what to do with them and I would like your opinion:

-It was said that you had to push the roof of your mouth WITH your teeth in contact, otherwise it would cause a lengthening of the face and a less defined chin. I'm sure I heard multiple times by Mike Mew that teeth should not be touching.

-Also, some said that pushing the middle of the palate would cause deepening of the palate, and not widening/rotation of the maxilla, worsening the situtation.

-I also saw that you had to concentrate not only on the back of your tongue, but also on the tip, to see maximum maxilla forward and upward movement.

Well, I don't know if I have to touch my teeth while mewing, don't know where I have to force (middle, tip, rear ???), any advices welcome !

Dr. Mew and most of the contributors here think that the teeth can either be slightly separated or in light contact (whichever you prefer). Both clenching and slacking the jaw should be avoided. Focus on developing the resting tone of both your tongue (pushing open) and masseters (pulling closed) in balance.

You should strive to engage all of the tongue from the tip at the incisive papillae to the posterior 1/3 against the soft palate. This includes pushing with the middle of the tongue against the hard palate. Sometimes compromise positions have to be found when there is inadequate space to correctly posture the tongue.

Thank you, I have my answer for the teeth.

I do have enough tongue space fortunately, I had a maxilla expansor as a kid. Do you know about the risk of digging your palate vertically, and making it too deep ?

I don't think you have to worry about making the palate more vaulted if you are evenly distributing the pressure across the whole roof of your mouth. If anything your vault should get shallower with transverse and/or sagittal expansion.

Thank you, i'm going to focus on good pressure repartition then.

This thread might reflect some of the ambiguity about the palate vault you mentioned:

As you said, there does seem to be a lack of consensus about how the contour of the roof of the mouth changes with good oral posture, but I think some of this confusion is only semantics. I've explained my understanding of how the palate remodels, but others might disagree.
