Hi, I've been breathing through my mouth for years because of allergies and a deviated septum. I've been consciously mewing for 2 days now and my jaw and tongue feel sore that I have to take Advil to diminish the pain. Is this normal in the beginning until my muscles get used to this new posture or am I doing something wrong to worsen myself?? Thanks!
For those wondering how I can now breath with my nose, I am wearing Breath Right Extra Clear nasal strips and they do wonders. I will have to schedule a septoplasty one day, but I really don't want to get jaw surgery for my overbite.
Soreness maybe, but pain no. If you need to take Advil it sounds like you have pain. Where are you having the jaw pain, is it in the joint?

Yes! I noticed that keeping my teeth together is a challenge for me, even when I try to do it slightly, it just feels so unnatural and uncomfortable. I have to take breaks and only keep my lips together and my tongue to the hard palate. My molars are really worn out from grinding (I'm in my late 20's and my dentist told me that the state of my teeth are as if i'm in my 40's) and my mouth just feels so compressed when I try keep it shut. I have an occlusal splint to correct my TMJ, but I rarely wear it and when I do, I spit it out in my sleep.
I hope that mewing won't cause me further problems, and that the discomfort will go away in time. I also had neck pain, migrains and tinnitus for years and I am hoping that correcting my breathing/jaw position will help.
I think you probably would benefit from seeing myofunctional therapist to help you with mewing and all those issues.

I have been mewing for about a week now and going at it pretty hard. My experience has been that I have felt a lot of soreness throughout my face, some sore teeth, and at times pain in my jaw. Most of these sensations have felt good, like I have been through a tough workout. I have not been a fan of the sore teeth in my lower jaw, as I think that might be because I am clenching my teeth together.
In my very short time doing this, I have realized that it is a process. Everyone has different tendencies, habits, and unique structure. Only you can really tell if the pain you are feeling is part of the process, or something worse. I would say you might want to try and observe what your tongue does when you swallow. It should go to the roof of your mouth, and push against the soft palate. That's what mine does anyways. Try and gently mimic this action voluntarily and see how that feels. But I would keep the tip of your tongue in the correct position, just above your top two front teeth.
It does sound like you have quite a few issues going on, so it wouldn't hurt to talk with someone who has a lot more experience than me. :) Sarah Hornsby is a myofunctional therapist who does free consultations on Skype. You might want to talk to her.... www.myfaceology.com
