Ive learned that I cannot split my sutures with just my tongue at age 27, even used a Schwartz appliance (and even spreading pliers) to no avail. Im looking into a bone-borne expander as it seems that they reliably split the sutures, I might also consider surgically splitting the sutures as well. The other methods appear to just minimally move the aveolar ridge (usually tipping teeth.)
