I had orthodontic work done as an adult and have now been wearing an essix retainer at night for the past couple of years. I have a wide enough arch to put my tongue on the top of my mouth. My maxilla seems to be recessed and my jaw is quite unsymmetrical in general. Would I still see benefits mewing and chewing gum or does the retainer wear at night essentially prevent all further progress?
I suspect the essix-style retainers restrict changes in arch symmetry and expansion, but might allow the tongue to have some effect on moving the maxilla up and forward since the retainer doesn't occupy the palate or obstruct the tongue from assuming its correct posture.
