Hi everyone,

Just wondering what's considered the appropriate mid-line of face?

For example, if you were getting braces, should the midline of the incisors line up with the philtrum, the nose, the equidistance between ears, etc.?

Thanks?

I consider the bisector of my interpupillary line as my "true" midline. In other words I measure the distance between my pupils, find the halfway point between, and then extrapolate a vertical line up and down my face. The bridge of my nose deviates left of this line and my dental midline used to be right of this line. Both have come closer to center during the course of my palate expansion.

Thanks Apollo.

Would you say this is what dentists/orthodontists are trained to line up with?

I think the bisector of the pupils is a pretty standard measurement, but depending on the asymmetry, alignment with more proximal landmarks might be more cosmetically important, like the tip of the nose, philtrum or chin, and especially coincidence of the upper and lower dental midline. It's easier to notice discrepancies between closer structures, but in my experience comparing to the bisector of the pupils is a better way to track skeletal progress as your facial form unwinds back toward symmetry. For example, when I started, the bridge of my nose was about 4mm left of center and my dental midline was about 2mm right of center. After expanding my palate by about 6mm, the bridge of my nose is now less than 2mm left of center and my dental midline is approximately centered, although I still have a pretty significant occlusal cant.
