The expansion you get from RPE is usually permanent, the suture is split so the RPE appliance is kept in your mouth to allow bone to fill in. Once the bone is completely filled in it is unlikely you'll get a relapse, retainers are not used to prevent relapse of the bone growth/expansion, it's used to prevent relapse of the teeth.
People see slow regression as they age. You won’t relapse though.
