What is the current consensus for the weekly expansion in adults using a standard plate removable palate expander? It seems that most people have done 1/4mm per week (such as the guy who did the AGGA appliance), however, Mew advocates for 1mm a week. His reasoning was that slower expansion causes more teeth tipping.
More than a year ago I successfully expanded with what I loosely recall to be .75-1mm a week. I believe the expansion to be a success because my front teeth separated very close to the same amount that the palate expander did (as what happens to children who undergo successful expansion). I left my expander in for months to solidify the change. I had some teeth tipping on my rear teeth on one side. I took a hiatus from my expander to let my tipped teeth recover. My two front teeth also moved back into a normal position albeit, now more in line with my other teeth (as what happens also happens to children who undergo successful expansion) resembling a U rather than a V.
I'm going to be going for a second round of expansion and was wondering if there was any new insight on how much expansion should be done weekly in adults.
Thank you
I have been recommending one 1/4mm turn every 2-5 days depending how long it takes for the expander to feel less snug in your mouth (which is influenced by factors like your age, how consistently you use the expander, and your oral poster when you aren't using the expander). Since you have already achieved some expansion, you might also have to slow down as you get close to your goal.
Thanks for the quick reply.
What was your starting intermolar width? How much expansion did you achieve with your first round, and how much has your intermolar width regressed since then? Do you plan to continue with the same expander you used before or are you starting with a new appliance for round 2?
how in the world do you put the expanders in your own mouth by yourself and where do you get this expanders from (i'm living in Denmark)
