M 19 - I recently started mewing a few days ago, and I'm not 100% sure that I'm doing it correctly. My biggest concern is that my palate seems to be widening. Is this supposed to happen? I first noticed this when I had difficulty putting my retainers in, as I haven't worn them since I began mewing.
If this is supposed to happen, should I be wearing my retainers at all? I just also mention that my mouth is quite sore now, especially when I'm chewing. Am I maybe just putting too much pressure on the roof of my mouth with my tongue?
Thanks in advance for any responses.
I recommend searching for the threads about quitting retainers and watching the orthotropics youtube videos on the subject. In short, depending how long it has been since your braces came off and how reliable your oral posture is, you could consider phasing out the retainer. Expansion is a good sign, but I'm a little concerned that your tongue pressure could be causing your teeth to tip rather than your palate to widen based on your description of pain while chewing. The retainer will prevent expansion, but if your oral posture isn't consistent (especially during sleep), then you could relapse without the retainer. So you have to assess for yourself what's best.
