Hi everyone!

So I’ve been doing some reading on here about palate expanders and people’s experiences with them and I noticed that the Schwartz, or ‘active plate’, expander seems to be most popular, along with the y-plate.

My question is, why isn’t anybody opting for the hyrax expander (‘palatinal expander’)? It seems like a better choice because it doesn’t have that acrylic pressing against the roof of your mouth, and it looks like it grabs the molars more firmly. But one thing I was curious about..is it removable like the Schwartz? Or does it need to be bonded to the teeth with cement?

For the very reason your mentioning is why people prefer schwartz, it is removable and not entirely tooth borne, the expansion force is being distributed through the teeth tissue/inside of the arch.
