How do you even close your mouth and bite without severing your tongue? With your mouth closed and your teeth together, where is your tongue? Answer is that it compresses into whatever shape its given, in this case within your arches (regardless of their width)
So I'm wondering why some people say their palate is too narrow to get their tongue up there. Surely even if your tongue is compressed laterally between the teeth and pushing against the palate, that's still Mewing?
You can imagine how someone with a severely high vaulted palate could struggle to engage the middle of the tongue against the roof of the mouth with the alveolar ridge holding the edges down.
Even in moderate cases, it can be challenging to plaster the whole tongue into the contour without concerted effort.
I have a deep palate, and getting the tongue up there is a struggle.
Also I have mild tongue tie which seems to be another limiting factor.
I have a deep palate as well but that's a different issue than the one I'm talking about, which is there not being enough space between the teeth, something I hear quite frequently.
As for the deep palate problem - I think the issue here is that it requires the tongue to bend the opposite way it normally does. Usually when the tongue bends it bends upwards (tip higher than the rest). However to fit the tongue in a high palate, you have to bend it the opposite way (middle higher than the rest). While this is difficult at first, I don't think it's impossible and indeed my tongue has vastly improved in that department after a few weeks of practice.
I used to try to compress my tongue all the time between my upper teeth and never worked. It always felt awkward and forced and my tongue would constantly require effort to keep it from falling. Four and half mm of expansion later and I am able to mew effortlessly.
