To be clear... Dr. Mew used to recommend chewing gum in kids. His own daughter did that. He reversed that position a 180 and now says how damaging it can be. I wonder what happened to his daughter? He talks about damage to the jaws and things that can result from that. Scary.
I understand, but what about tongue chewing? Not using the TMJ that much, and wont even last long since its really exhausting.

I personally worry about abnormal amounts of pressure applied to the palate. At the same time... there may be merit to what is within the norms. I recently posted on that here: /community/community/main-forum/anti-aging-chewing/#post-16146 But yes... what you are saying makes more sense. The teeth pressure is bad, but I do highly suspect that the normally applied pressure to the palate (such as when eating) can possibly translate to a lateral pressure applied to the palate, depending on tongue movements. That was my thought exactly. With that being said, I highly favor braces for children as their faces are just too maliable to really handle any up/down pressure. It is seriously potentially problematic for kids.
Mike Mew has not done a 180 on chewing, where are you getting that from? He's said that chewing can exacerbate jaw joint problems, what more do you want from him?
