I’ve heard of people reporting a lot of good results with chewing gum, but I heard that doing so causes TMJ (due to overuse of the jaw) and other potential problems.

Why not just chew each-side everyday for only 20 minutes? No TMJ development and still good usage of the muscle. Alternatively just focus on chewing your food more?

It's only dangerous if your TMJ is compromised, which tbf is most people since the majority have a malocclusion. Some chewing isn't that bad though even with TMJ problems.
