Do drinking straws force you to perform an improper swallow (sucking in cheeks )?

Just curious since straws require suction in the mouth, which don't you get from sucking in cheeks?

I can't say if it is helping, but I've stopped using drinking straws. Here's a relevant thread:  /community/community/main-forum/myofunctional-value-of-drinking-through-a-straw/#

I've been avoiding drinking straws since I started mewing because I figure that they encourage a suckle swallow pattern rather than a mature push swallow.

I just meant that the typical way people use a straw seems to engage the cheek muscles and encourage an immature swallow pattern.

Maybe use a spoon? I wouldn't get too hung up on it. If you feel like using a straw every now and then, go for it. In the thread I linked above, Progress was recommending a method using a straw against the roof of the mouth and drawing with the tongue that he thought might actually be a beneficial exercise.

I don't think it's that big an issue. How would Ugg drink water in his day? He'd probably cup his hands, submerge them in the river and then drink from them like a cup, while sucking. Either that or bending down to the water and sucking from the surface.

The method recommended by @Progress in the thread link given by @Apollo works as far as I can tell. My buccinators keep trying to kick in, but master it and drink all the smoothies and milkshakes you want.  😀

My best friend who has amazing skull development has been dealing with TMJD lately and slight face melting. She had for a few years been using the water bottles with the built in nib/straw that you suck on, and she wonders if that's actually a factor, given that her posture and tongue posture are still really excellent.

I do agree that there is a way to use straws that don't engage the cheeks. I wish I could remember the movie but I remember a female movie star doing it and it kind of blew my mind. It looks like she's not doing anything other than holding the straw in her mouth, but you can see her swallow. After trying it, it's definitely possible as Apollo and Progress have mentioned -- which is fantastic, as I drink apple cider vinegar and don't want to damage my teeth.

This is how you can use a straw: put the straw PAST your lips and bite on it. Use your tongue to draw the liquid up, like a tongue sweep. Then do a Mew push swallow, where the tongue kinda pushes the straw against the palate. Your straw will be chewed up, but this is what I do. Also, I see beautiful people drink like this.
