How does the widening of the maxilla affect the zygoma?

To increase the nasal cavity width, some people push apart the roof of the mouth, splitting the palatal sutre and widening the maxilla.

Since the maxilla is connected to the zygoma, how does the zygoma move to accomodate the widening maxilla? Does it move outwards, upwards or rotate?

With MSE, the midface is supposed to swing out with a fulcrum around the frontozygomatic suture:

MSE Fulcrum 2

Thank you, that’s really interesting. Do you know why this happens? I don’t understand how widening the maxilla would cause it to swing forward.

I thought people who used the MSE appliance didn’t report any swinging forward of the maxilla.

On it's own, MSE is supposed to give only very slight forward change, maybe a millimeter or less, along with significant transverse change. Why this occurs is up for debate. We discuss some theories in the MSE asymmetry and protraction thread. Extra-oral traction can be added to try and increase the forward displacement.

@apollo But that picture you provided in this thread seems a lot more than a millimeter. It looks about 10 millimeters of forward movement.

I think that might just be the perspective. It's hard to tell how much forward change there is from a frontal view. Here's the article that image is from:

It usually doesn't make much of a difference in most results you'd see as most people who have MSE, Le Fort or etc. have very flat, weak bone structure -- and a few millimeters of expansion isn't going to take you from boneless, pancake-faced to sharp and stunning anyways. Maybe in some specific circumstances or cases it's worth it, but -- for example -- with myself it's pointless since I don't have a "natural phenotype" or bundle/facial anatomy that allows for broad features (which is why I have cosmetically made adjustments as no single appliance or surgery is bound to make one go from pancake horse-face to broad and beautiful/angular/etc.)

Sometimes cosmetics is the only way to get the looks you want/need sadly, as God or nature didn't appear to want all of us to be bonefully beautiful by default.

I mean in theory it should help because all of these facial bones are nearly adjoining, but something like customized distraction osteogenesis is probably magnitudes better.

That's the problem with MSE, totally unnatural movements occurring. With mewing over long periods of time, the changes are gradual and dictated not only by bone movement but also by bone growth and bone remodelling.

I would expect with slow forces the zygos not widening too much, but changing shape a lot and moving forward, and eye sockets becoming more square.

Basically a sideways and upwards movement instead of rotation.
