I have stopped wearing my retainer permanently for around 2 weeks now, and I already have a full gap in between my front 2 teeth, it’s probably about 1 mm on top while only barely apart on the bottom. I have started to whistle accidentally a ton when I pronounce certain words. My mom can definately tell as she asks me how many times I have wore my retainer as she isn’t aware I’ve stopped doing it. I’ve read that with regular palate expanders it will close eventually so I assume the same principles apply with mewing. Just it might be a bit troublesome if it gets worse considering I’ve only been off of my retainer for under 3 weeks.

May I ask if the gap is from mewing or the fact that you got rid of the retainer? In other words did you have a gap before and got it fixed and started wearing a retainer, or did you not and the gap was the result of mewing? If it was from mewing you be glad that you are getting some expansion from mewing, 1 mm expansion in 3 weeks is pretty good. If not, take a look at this video

If you're placing you're tongue correctly in the roof of the mouth and teeth are lightly touching and lips are sealed you are good to go.

It’s certainly from mewing, I took habitual breaks from wearing the retainer for maybe a week at a time and my teeth remained touching every time I breaked.
