I've noticed that for me to able to press my tounge decently hard up on the palate, I have to use my facial muscles as aid. If i try to completely relax my facial muscles I find it very hard to be able to push my tounge up with any significant force. My fear is that Im using my buccinator muscles as aid and therefore developing chubby cheeks doing this. Any thoughts? Is it fine to use facial muscles as assistance when mewing if it means being able to apply more force?

You want to be careful in that. Have you tried tongue strengthening exercises? It's possible your tongue is weak, so you're overcompensating with other muscles, a lot like what happens with chewing and swallowing.

Can you give me an example of a few tongue strengthening exercises?
