Why does the palate come down when it's expanding/expanded?

Why? And should you make room for it to let it come down, when you're wearing the Schwarz appliance?

The palate seems to come down because the way the expansion happens, picture the maxilla coming apart with a fulcrum of this movement at the nasion area.  It becomes shallower, and it comes down relative to the teeth as a reference point.  If you use other reference points, it may even appear to move up!  Because of this relative downward movement compared to the teeth, you should have the top of your expander trimmed 2-3mm to accommodate this.

doesn't  pulling the palate down cause downward growth and doesn't pulling down create longer faces like what braces do?

Nothing gets pulled down necessarily. The expansion rather makes everything else go away from the apex which makes it shallower, making the appearance of coming down.

no all orthodontists give expanders and braces narrow the palate, that is the opposite of what you want
