Wow, since I've been learning more about how airways and posture affect facial structure I see it all the time...and I just want to let people know. Today I saw a little girl I knew as a toddler, and she must have untreated allergies, because the difference in her face from her parents and siblings, and herself when she was little, was incredible.

I really, really would like to get involved in helping people change their growth pattern, and I don't even know where to start. There seem to be no orthodontists or dentists practicing developmental dentistry in my state. I'm 40 and am a single parent, so a prolonged education would be hard to plan and pull off. How to get into...I guess orofacial myology is the best word for it, is confusing. Become a dental hygienist, a speech therapist, a physical therapy assistant? I don't even know. But wow, there is such an incredible need. It's so wild to pass someone on the street and know the kinds of health problems they have or will have, because of their face. And there are so many! It's hard to believe.

You might be find it worthwhile to volunteer at the American Academy of Physiologic Medicine and Dentistry (AAPMD.org). Their sister site Airwayhealth.org also will use volunteers. I'd be volunteering there if I wasn't so occupied trying to find and access treatment for my own issues.

Yes I see kids with open mouths and faces that are showing signs of growing south all the time. Huge urge to approach the parents and tell them about tongue posture. You just can't do it without coming across as an interfering crackpot who just insulted their kid's looks.

I have a client who has a baby girl who is impossibly cute and lights up the whole room with her smile. But she's being bottle fed, so already she's on the path to substandard skull development. But again, what are you gonna do - for most people, the bottle/breast debate is heated enough without bringing looks into it. And they'll just call you an interfering crackpot.

Yes, I think about ~90% of kids are mouth breathers in my area, but the thing is that more and more women are having babies premature, then the milk doesn't always come in. Or there is some other medical reason. Then husbands are not as likely as in the past to support their wives financially, so the wife has to go back to work sometime soon after giving birth. Not even a year break is enough. Count on saving up and preparing for living on one income for 3-5 years, more if you intend to have additional children. Work for men needs to become a great source of their happiness again, thus they will be happy to financially support their wife, and women need less stress to help prevent giving birth prematurely, as well as ensuring they have the support needed to initiate and continue a breastfeeding relationship.

Remember this pain... and let it activate you.

Honestly everyone can see it, they just don't consciously acknowledge it for what it is. They perceive it as "sickly looking" or tired or just straight up unattractive.

Yeah same. I feel so disgusting, like my face is melting apart. I have braces and I know I just won't make any progress at all at the end of the day. Maybe I should give up.

Please don't do any of those things. No one is disgusting. We all just start from different places with different experiences, and we all want the same thing, which is to be healthy. The point is not to look perfect, which no one does and isn't always that much of a comfort, but to be healthy enough to live the life you want to live. And those are changes you CAN make. People of all ages make huge gains in health (and by extension, in appearance) through forming new habits. It doesn't take heroics, just a lot of patience.

You might like this youtube page. The woman is a real speech and language therapist, not an internet crazy, and has some very informative videos. https://www.youtube.com/user/sarahkh12/videos   I think you're unlikely to hurt yourself with her suggestions! and she has a facebook support group.

The basic goals of myofunctional therapy are the same with or without braces: nose breathing, lip seal, tongue resting on the roof of the mouth, teeth resting together, and a proper swallowing pattern. Those things WILL change your face over time--the human body is relentlessly, amazingly plastic. Form follows function--so use the functions that build the form you want.

You might not see a dramatic widening of the palate while wearing your braces, but good oral posture will prevent relapse after they come off. You can expand your airways while wearing your braces, since most of that development takes place behind the palate. You can do amazing work with your neck and chin, as Kyte has done recently. Everyone gets craniofacial dystrophy in the same way--slowly, over time--and they get positive facial development the same way.
