"Im sure everyone who browses the looksmaxxing section of this forum has seen something related to how chewing increases midface length but there isnt really an explanation on it
It causes an increase in length by rotating the maxilla clockwise, this is due to when chewing with the molars it applies an upwards force to the back of the maxilla, when you an apply a force to one end of something, it will cause a rotation and in this case it rotates the maxilla clockwise
This is why despite being properly developed native americans have long midfaces and not top tier undereye support (as the maxilla rotates CW the orbitals move down reducing undereye support.) It is due to their strenuous chewing which thereby rotates their maxilla clockwise
Changes in maxilla rotation would be very slow you would have to chew for a long time to get results, but they can be attained nonetheless
you can counter this by chewing a more frontal part of the palate, like the premolars which would redistribute the force to a more centralized position and cause just an upwards translation with no rotation"
What do you think about this?
I'm still trying different forms of chewing, maybe I'll answer one day from personal experience. All I can say right now is chewing with masseters definitely makes midface wider and face shorter. Chewing with temporalis makes upper face/zygos much wider. Both will easily lead to bad proportions though. There's no point in having really wide zygos if your lower jaw is narrow. For most of us, lower jaw should be the focus. I currently believe the medial pterygoid may be a muscle of interest here.
EDIT : I want to add that this advice is strictly for males considering male facial proportions. I think females may want wider zygos and narrower jaw.
hm, so you say, that chewing with molars make the midface shorter?
Yeah, I've proved it on myself and there's some medical evidence backing that up. I went from fwHr of 1,69 to around 1,95 . A lot of people said my face looked different. While it did improve my upper face looks, it also ruined face proportions, so watch out?
Yes but it's best to not develop too much one way. So chew on all teeth and your maxilla will develop ideally instead of too strongly one direction.
I would say caution to what Eddie says here. People have different chewing patterns, one leads to one thing, another to another.
I am still trying to figure this one out myself. I have had a deep bite my entire life. I would also chew gum almost everyday. I’ve always been forced to chew on my molars given my curve of spree. Deep bites usually get worse overtime due to constant molar contact. The side I chewed on more even became more recessed and I developed a crooked smile and the muscles on that side are not as strong as the other side (weird). But I always had robust features throughout my 20s. I’m 32 now and lost them.
Now part of my believes that it worsened my deep bite making my face longer, but at the same time my face really started to get long and flat once I stopped chewing gum within the last couple years. I believe the main culprit of my CFD has been my posture getting worse, but maybe that’s also due to my bite getting deeper and my posture forcing itself into a position of optimal airway.
I agree with eddie that all teeth should be used (if you can) in cases like mine it’s really hard.
Definitely keep an eye on which practice you choose. If I could go back I wouldn’t have chewed all that gum tbh.

How do you mean?
How you chew is not going to affect much in the way of facial development, and your "chewing pattern" is more determined by the position of the maxilla than anything else. Just chew normally, use your front teeth to incise and your back teeth to chew/grind food, there's no reason to make this complicated.
This isn't true at all. You can use the muscles in different combinations to achieve different chewing patterns.
- @auxiliarus wdym do your facial height change or just widht?
There was a definite zygo increase which is still very noticeable. But mostly reduced facial height.
@auxiliarus so you saying your maxilla get small or its get foward so its look like short?
@auxiliarus so you saying your maxilla get small or its get foward so its look like short?
Most of facial shortening from chewing comes from teeth getting pushed into gums, so lower third and lower maxilla will become shortened.
