Im having a hard time getting the swallowing down properly. Seems like no matter what I do I always activate my facial muscles, even though my tounge does a thrust motion. From what I understand you masseters are used even when doing a proper swallow. How do I know Im using the masseters and not my buccinators?
Any tips in general that helped you get the proper swallow down? I found the Mew videos to be quite confusing. How do I know if Im doing this correctly?
Yes, expanding my palate was the biggest help for me here. Until it was quite wide I had to think about every swallow. Some here have said a myofunctional therapist helped them.
Remember this pain... and let it activate you.
When I tongue swallow I think what I'm doing is executing a sort of sucking motion from front to back with my tongue - this drives the saliva to the back of my throat, at which point my throat muscles take over. It's very important to get that sucking motion down, with your tongue on the palate. You know the suction force you use to get your tongue to stick to the palate? Its that suction, but moving from the front to the back of the tongue.
When I swallow like this, I don't feel any muscles activate in my cheeks, either masseters or buccinators. My tongue is doing all the work.
@AlphaMinus So do you sort of first apply pressure with the tip of the tongue, and then with the back? Like basically pushing the tongue onto the palate, but initiating with the tip and finishing with the back of the tongue?
