Question about palate expander

Hi everyone! I'm an 18 year old male.

I am still trying to understand all this orthotropic stuff and was wondering if someone could explain the palate expander to me. I have been pushing the posterior third of my tongue against my palate for about 6 months now but I feel that when I'm not paying attention, the pressure lessens greatly. Also, I'm afraid that at night, I may breathe through my mouth and/or with the tongue not against my palate. Will the palate expander help keep my tongue on my palate at night/day and how much will it help with forward maxillary growth.

Thanks!

An expander widens the palate which gives more space for the tongue allowing for easier tongue posture. A Palate expander in itself does not facilitate or encourage putting your tongue on the roof of the mouth, in fact, some obstruct it. Here's an example of an expander that is easier to perform tongue posture versus not really possible:

And this is how an expander works:

You turn a screw which widens the device a minute amount. As you can tell by the pictures displayed some vary in where the forces are applied. Some expanders apply forces on the molars/teeth, while others apply it on the tissue (tooth-borne vs tissue-borne). Some perform very rapid expansion others slowly. In my opinion, slow expansion is better, especially for adults.

Thanks for the reply. I read from another post that the palate expander helps bring the maxilla up and forward over time. Here is the post I read:

/community/adult-palate-expansion-progress/

Could you tell me if the results in that post are expected when using a palate expander for 1-2 yrs?

Thank you.
