I am struggling to find clear cut answers to this question. According to Ronald Ead, wearing a traditional expander just made his teeth flare out and damaged his gums. And still, quite many of the people in this community seems to consider them, and quite a few of those goes on for a purchase. It would therefore be welcomed to hear about the experiences from those of you who have been wearing expanders. The well-read ones of you are also very welcome to further outline the potential risks, as well as the benefits. Hopefully, this will answer the question is it is worth consider a traditional expander.

To anyone wondering, here is a link to a website selling the kind of expanders I have in mind:  https://www.bracesshop.net/en/search?sSearch=expander

Thanks, and happy mewing. 🌲👅👊

Who cares. Why on earth would one do one over the MSE?

@fgsfds

Not everyone has the money for MSE, not to mention access to the actual treatment. If traditional expanders potential outweighs it’s eventual downsides, it may be worth to consider. Hence this post. It seems like you think they are completely useless?

They are not known to work well...because those who know what they are capable of don’t tell.  Here’s the deal...the Schwartz type appliances are #1 not for kids.  (Extreme danger) #2 are not great for adults.  They do tend to tip teeth, but that’s because people are idiots and don’t know basic principles.  So...every time you swallow, you get a sunburst pattern of pressure on the palate.  With something like this in place, you inhibit the sunburst pattern and get primarily upward pressure.  That is because it’s a piece of plastic and so the forces converge into a singular direction.  What this means is...outside of active treatment (turning)...just using it to hold changes will actually cause the palate to shrink.  Bone is slow-moving, living tissue.  So, when you swallow, you don’t get the sunburst pattern.  However...I have heard of stuff like this working.  I just don’t know if working means pulling dental bone through the alveolar ridge...  This   Each of these appliances are specific to a purpose.  But let’s assume a palatal deformation where the teeth are narrow and the palate is highly arched.  A new appliance is in the works just for this case.  That’s a needed appliance from the health-risk standpoint.

I’ll keep you updated!

Bless Ronald Ead’s heart...he just kept turning it and turning it...missing a follow-up.  That’s per my understanding.  A mirror is a powerful tool.  I would use it and not miss appointments...but there is more:

I do know these devices tend to tip teeth...but that’s because it’s like your palate is a blanket...and it’s over a bunch of boxes...and you keep pulling both sides of the blanket to reach the edges of the bed.  The edges aren’t reached, but you keep on tugging so hard.  Unless you take some boxes out, it won’t reach so well.  That’s why Vivos shaves down the acrylic.

@darkindigo

So you are basically saying that they work, but one needs to be careful and know what one is doing?

I didn't read everything yet, but I noticed the acrylic plate that Ronald Ead used had no wire in front of the teeth, this may explain the tooth flaring/tipping.

@jelly

Hopefully that may mean we don’t have to count out the traditional expanders, yet.
